Virechan- therapeutic purgation
If Vamana moves upward, Virechana moves downward.
Virechana is therapeutic purgation—the medically supervised induction of bowel evacuation using selected Ayurvedic preparations.
In traditional Ayurvedic reasoning, Virechana is particularly associated with Pitta, whose qualities include heat, sharpness and transformation.
Again, it is tempting to translate the procedure into modern language and call it simply a laxative cleanse. That misses much of the classical idea.
The preparation before Virechana, selection of the purgative, timing, observation of the number and character of evacuations and the food given afterward all form part of the treatment.
The goal is not uncontrolled diarrhoea. It is a measured therapeutic response.
A fascinating question: what happens to the gut ecosystem?
Modern research has begun asking questions that the ancient physicians could never have measured directly.

One small clinical study examined Virechana and intestinal bacterial patterns in 19 people with obesity. Stool samples were analysed before and after treatment. Researchers reported alterations in the colonisation pattern of aerobic gut bacteria, including changes involving E. coli, alongside clinical changes.
